Rhamu Town, Mandera-Kenya

  • TaskImplementation of a 60KW Solar Grid Tied Power Plant System

Rhamu is located in extreme northeastern Kenya, at the border with Ethiopia, approximately 73 kilometres (45 mi), by road, west of Mandera, where the headquarters of the county are located.

Temperatures are relatively high with a minimum and a maximum of 240C and 420C in July and February respectively. With such arid temperatures and long spells of sun, the Rural Electrification Authority (REA) saw it best to set up a solar substation to provide electricity to the small towns in the region in order to maximize the use of readily available materials here i.e the sun.

We worked with the Rural Electrification Authority to implement a 60KW solar system together with a generator set to source power to the people of the small towns within the location of Rhamu Mandera. This has drastically improved the amount of electricity to house holds and the streets of the towns which are also powered by solar powered street lights. The villagers can now access affordable electricity locally made.

The solar system implemented here for maximum impact included:

  • 240 pieces LG panels 250W
  • 4 pieces STP 15000
  • Control Board
